Small Delaware town triples police liability insurance
July 17, 2021 GMT
DEWEY BEACH, Del. (AP) A small Delaware town has opted to triple its police department’s liability insurance, noting a rise in civil rights lawsuits.
The Dewey Beach Town Council voted recently to increase the coverage from $1 million to $3 million, the News Journal reported Friday.
“I think it’s prudent for the town to consider upping the amount to protect us, so, God forbid, something happened we wouldn’t have to liquidate any town assets,” said Police Chief Sam Mackert during a July 9 council meeting.
Mackert said he’s been watching other towns across the country pay settlements far beyond Dewey Beach’s policy limit.
This time of year, in the shadow of the iconic “Dolle’s Salt Water Taffy” sign on the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk, you would normally find a line stretching toward the sand in front of Thrasher’s french fry shop. A local favorite for many of the thousands of visitors who flock to this Delaware seaside town each summer, Thrasher’s has been dishing up fresh-cut potatoes for 92 years.
This year, there’s no line. No fries. No customers.
Because there are no workers.
Dean Shuttleworth, the general manager, says he temporarily shuttered the location one of three Thrasher’s outposts in the Rehoboth area because he cannot find workers to staff the shop. One of the other locations is fully open. The third is only opening on the weekends again, due to too few workers.

Sen. Ernie Lopez, R-Lewes
Sen. Ernesto “Ernie” Lopez, R-Lewes, will not seek re-election. His current term will end Nov. 8, 2022.
“It is with a great deal of thanks and humility to the people of the 6th District that I wish to announce I will not be seeking re-election to a fourth term in the Delaware State Senate,” Lopez said in a statement released by the Senate Minority Caucus. “It has been a tremendous honor to serve you and your families for the last decade and I look forward to continuing that dedicated service until the end of my current term.”
