Feb 23, 2021 / 08:36 PM EST INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) Black Greek organizations have been impacting communities around the world for more than a century. Black fraternities and sororities started with college-educated people of color, focusing on issues and advocating for the Black community. It’s a bond like no other. Four sororities and five fraternities make up “The Divine 9.” In Indianapolis, all nine organizations serve together under the National Pan-Hellenic Council to make sure there is community change and betterment. “Black Greek organizations have always been a source of family and community. When all of our orgs were founded, Black people did not have a voice, like they do today,” said Ezell Marrs lll, member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

The Rider University junior and her Zeta Phi Beta sorority sisters had planned a “Galentine’s Day” virtual event, along with another Greek organization on campus, to celebrate friendship. Five minute before the event’s 9:30 start time, Eley noticed an unusual number of users in the Zoom waiting room. They began admitting people into the meeting, and that’s when things took a turn. Before Eley knew what was happening, the event was hijacked by uninvited Zoom bombers who bombarded attendees with racist and disturbing content. Attackers began changing their Zoom user names to racist, mocking phrases before taking control of the screen, drawing swastikas and writing racial slurs for Black people across thee slides.
