BRASILIA (Reuters) - The Brazilian unit of Spanish telecom Telefonica SA said on Tuesday that it had agreed with Canadian pension fund CDPQ to create a joint venture to develop a “neutral and independent” wholesale fiber optic network in Brazil.
According to a securities filing, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) will invest up to 1.8 billion reais ($317 million) in the venture, receiving a 50% voting share. Telefonica Brasil will have a 25% voting stake, while Telefonica Infra, another subsidiary of the Spanish company, will have the remaining 25% share.
The new venture, called FiBrasil Infraestrutura e Fibra Ótica S.A., aims to reach 5.5 million households within 4 years.

MADRID (Reuters) - Telefonica is seeking a partner like U.S.-based American Tower for part of a fibre optics network expansion it is planning in Brazil, Chief Operating Officer Angel Vila said on Thursday.
Telefonica will fund the first stage of the development off its own balance sheet and then there will be a second stage for which “we are addressing through agreements with fibre owners like American Tower,” Vila told analysts on a conference call.

In a novel experiment for Spain, Telefonica unit Movistar Plus will release its big new banner series, Enrique Urbizu’s historical adventure “Libertad,” day-and-date on March 26 on both its pay-SVOD platform and in Spanish theaters.
Theatrical distribution in Spain on “Libertad,” which is set in early 19th century Spain, in the wake of the French Revolution, will be handled by Adolfo Blanco’s A Contracorriente Films.
