Trail Blazers introduce Chauncey Billups as new head coach

Craig Mitchelldyer Originally published on June 29, 2021 6:51 pm The Portland Trail Blazers introduced Chauncey Billups as their new head coach on Tuesday, with officials attempting to both build support for the new coach and avoid pointed questions about a rape allegation he faced in 1997. Even before Billups spoke, president of basketball operations Neil Olshey addressed the elephant in the room: the opposition among many fans to hiring a coach accused of sexual assault as a player. Olshey said the team paid for an outside investigation, and he says it confirmed Billups’ account of what occurred. “That nothing non-consensual happened,” Olshey said. “We stand by Chauncey everyone in the organization, and believe he’s the right choice to be our head coach, and the right choice to be the kind of ambassador in the Portland community that everyone here has become accustomed to.”

This has not been lost on people around the NBA or Portland Trail Blazers fans, especially given the fact that Becky Hammon was a finalist for the job with Billups.

That’s what it seems like he wants to do, and he probably has the leverage to do it. Nobody can say he failed to give the Blazers a fair shake. Dame isn’t like that. He’s done about as much as he could possibly do with what he’s been provided in Portland: LaMarcus Aldridge, C.J. McCollum, a cast of small forwards who can’t shoot, Jusuf Nurkić struggling to stay healthy. Through it all, the Blazers have been good but not great. The g
