As the U.S. Forest Service has opened up ATV and off-road vehicle permits for the Allegheny National Forest, the state reports that its licenses for these sports vehicles continue to trend upwards.
The U.S. Forest Service offers permits for off-road vehicles to use federal forests, including the region’s closest federal lands, the Allegheny National Forest. Meanwhile, the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources issues its permits year-round for residents to operate off-road vehicles wherever they are permissible in the state.

The modernization of Ryerson Station State Park’s campgrounds is immediately paying dividends as campers flocked to the park last year to spend more time outdoors during the coronavirus pandemic.
Attendance in the camp area, which was renovated for nearly two years, more than doubled in 2020 compared to the last full year it was open to the public in 2017.
The upgrades included new indoor showers and deluxe cottages as part of the “revisioning plan” designed to make the state park in western Greene County more appealing to visitors after the loss of its key attraction, Duke Lake, nearly 16 years ago.

Carol Slack, Duval County educator for 40+ years, dies at 76
Long-time advocate of public education remembered by colleagues as humble, dedicated & selfless

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The scores of students who sat in Carol Vivian Slack’s classes during her 40-year tenure as a teacher in Duval County Public Schools would likely remember her performing all the characters’ voices as she read aloud from books like James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate factory.
Slack passed away on January 17, 2021, at the age of 76.
A life-long resident of Jacksonville, Slack began her career with Duval County Public Schools in August 1970 and retired in June 2010 from Crystal Springs Elementary School.
