A youth coach, a karaoke-loving couple and a teen who worked with incarcerated fathers were among nine people recognized for their service in the community this week. Eight of them earned the Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards, which typically is presented in April during National Volunteer Week, said Alice Keene, Pitt County special projects coordinator, but COVID-19 restrictions prevented in-person recognition of the volunteers. With those restrictions still in place, the Pitt County Board of Commissioners honored the recipients during its virtual meeting on Monday. Keene said the governor’s office allows counties to submit up to 10 individuals for the award, which recognizes North Carolinians who have shown concern and compassion for their neighbors.
