Council to dive into proposed 1-mill budget hike | News, Sports, Jobs

mmaroney@sungazette.com City Council is expected to tackle next year’s proposed $29 million budget in a remote meeting tonight. It remains unclear if council will adopt the proposed budget, but Council President Randall J. Allison said there is a consensus to get it done before the end of the year because if no budget is passed no money can be spent. Mayor Derek Slaughter’s proposed budget carries a proposed 1-mill tax hike, and he and council members said that could be reduced further with discussions tonight. One mill of real estate tax generates $860,000. A 1-mill tax increase would be $100 more for a house assessed at $100,000.

Potentially paralyzing winter storm to start today, end Thursday morning | News, Sports, Jobs

mmaroney@sungazette.com MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette A plow truck is loaded with a salt/grit mix at the Williamsport Streets Department s garage on West Third Street Tuesday afternoon, ahead of the region s first snow storm. As if 2020 could get any worse, a winter storm may dump up to 15 inches of snow over the course of the next day. Snow is expected to begin in Williamsport about noon today, according to the National Weather Service in State College. The expected paralyzing Nor’easter will have state Department of Transportation and city plow truck operators working for hours on end and will require patience among those already suffering from pandemic fatigue leading up to one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.
