Members of the city’s community centennial committee will work over the next four years to provide input, collaborate, plan and execute the city’s 100 th anniversary events, activities and initiatives that will take place in 2024. “It will certainly be exciting anticipating what project or projects our Community Centennial Committee will come up with,” says Councillor Rick Kerr, chair of the community services committee. “We are certainly represented by a capable and diverse group of citizens who, I’m sure, are equally excited about their upcoming efforts.”

Oshawa in mourning after death of former long-time councillor Posted on February 8, 2021 by oshawaexpress in CITY, NEWS Former long-time Oshawa City Councillor John Aker has died. Aker passed away on Thursday, Feb. 4 surrounded by friends and family at the age of 78 years. “Aker dedicated his life to his family, and the service of others within the City of Oshawa, and the Region of Durham,” states his obituary. Aker was first elected to Oshawa City Council as an Alderman in 1973 serving as both city and regional councillor from 1974 to 1997 when he stepped away to join the Ontario Municipal Board. A 10-year member of the board, Aker returned to local government in 2010 where he served two more terms as a city and regional councillor.

Ward 4 Regional and City Councillor Rick Kerr, chair of the community services committee, says this is “terrific news” for residents of all ages in these areas. “In these pandemic times, enhanced outdoor activity opportunities are so important to the increased well-being of our fellow citizens,” he says. Located at 811 Glen St., south of Bloor Street between Park and Ritson Roads, Cordova Valley Park will be the home of Oshawa’s newest off-leash dog area and will also feature a new playground, enhanced amenities and an improved soccer layout.

Council recently approved the intersection for a southbound stop sign and pedestrian paint markings. While the majority of Oshawa city councillors were on board with this change, noting the benefit it will bring to pedestrians, Councillor John Gray says he’s concerned about the possible delays and backup the new stop would cause to vehicle traffic. “I think it’s actually going to delay traffic even worse and muddle up pedestrian traffic to boot,” says Gray.

BIA Board Chair Ivano Labricciosa says it’s unfortunate and is disappointed in how things rolled out. However, he says he hopes the city will be able to pick up and continue to carry out the services and functions previously performed by the organization. “Our worry is that the city picks up the functions and supports the businesses successfully, and continues with a plan for the downtown as we were envisioning.”
