The G League is headed to the Walt Disney World complex for its 18-team, bubble-style tournament next month. The New York Times NBA writer Marc Stein delivered the details on the G League’s plan on Friday.
The NBA has today notified its teams that an 18-team @nbagleague bubble including the Ignite select team featuring NBA Draft prospects will take place at Walt Disney World near Orlando starting in February Marc Stein (@TheSteinLine) January 8, 2021
Last year, the NBA completed its late-season and postseason schedules at the same property.
On the court, the G League is set to feature a few more familiar faces than usual. In December, the league decided to relax the rules for NBA veterans incentivizing teams to roll the dice on experienced players. ESPN’s Jonathan Givony detailed the G League’s new set up last month.
These, presumably, are players who have signed G League contracts but whose rights aren’t currently held by any teams. A player whose returning rights are controlled by a club participating in the G League’s bubble season wouldn’t be eligible to be drafted.
For instance, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports (via Twitter) that
LiAngelo Ball has signed a contract to play in the bubble. Since the Oklahoma City Blue hold his returning rights and are playing in the bubble, Ball shouldn’t be in the general draft pool.
The Blue are one of 18 teams set to participate in the shortened bubble season, which is expected to take place at Walt Disney World. That list of teams can be found right here.
