COVID response draws criticism for Illinois unemployment agency

COVID-19 response yields criticism for Illinois unemployment agency

A central Illinois congressman’s exchange on Twitter with the state agency in charge of handing out aid to the unemployed highlighted public frustration with a system under scrutiny as everyday people struggle with the economic fallout of COVID-19. U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis’ back-and-forth last month with the Illinois Department of Employment Security began with a video of the Taylorville Republican in his kitchen describing his personal experience with a fraudulent unemployment claim being made in his name and his attempts to contact the state about it. IDES acting director Kristin Richards said the agency, with a staffing level half of what it was a decade ago, has done a good job meeting the “staggering” challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic to put in place five new federal programs, handle a six-fold increase in unemployment claims and pay out 16 times more benefits than the $1.16 billion in unemployment compensation disbursed during the same nine-month period a year ago

US House Passes Resolution to Cover Colorectal Cancer Screening

WBGZ Radio 12/22/2020 | By Cole Lauterbach - Illinois Radio Network When a Medicare-paid coloscopy uncovers something troublesome, a biopsy to find out if a real threat exists can cost thousands of dollars. Legislation co-sponsored by Illinois’ entire congressional delegation would require the federal government to cover the second step as well.  The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed H.R. 1570, the Removing Barriers to Colorectal Cancer Screening Act, last Wednesday. U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, a Taylorville Republican, is an original co-sponsor of the measure.  “Fighting cancer and reducing its incidence is personal to me,” he said in a release. “21 years ago, my wife was diagnosed and treated for colon cancer. It’s a genetic form of cancer, Lynch syndrome, that could affect our kids, and we’re fortunate that she was able to receive treatment that saved her life.”
