WASHINGTON (AP) President-elect Joe Biden is nominating his former rival Pete Buttigieg as secretary of transportation and intends to choose former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm as energy secretary. Granholm’s intended nomination was confirmed to The Associated Press by two people familiar with the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid preempting the president-elect’s announcement. Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, would be the first openly gay person confirmed by the Senate to a Cabinet post. Granholm served as Michigan’s attorney general and two terms as Michigan governor. Biden also picked former environmental regulator Gina McCarthy for the powerful new position of domestic climate chief.
Deceased GVSU student identified as Taylor DeRosa of Royal Oak
The Grand Valley State University student whose body was found over the weekend has been identified as Taylor DeRosa, a first-year student from Royal Oak, college officials said Tuesday.
University police and the Ottawa County Sheriff s Office are continuing their investigation into the 18-year-old s death, calling it suspicious. Her body was found in the intramural fields and cross-country trail at the Allendale campus. The cause of her death has not been determined as of Tuesday.
GVSU students are planning a candlelight vigil in memory of DeRosa at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Cook Carillon Tower on the Allendale campus. Face masks are required, along with social distancing.

ROYAL OAK, MI The Royal Oak community is mourning the death of a former Royal Oak High School student who was found dead on the campus of Grand Valley State University over the weekend.
Taylor DeRose, a 2020 graduate of Royal Oak High School, was found dead over the weekend at GVSU, where she was a first-year student. Her cause of death has not been released, but authorities have said that it is suspicious. We have learned of the tragic death of Taylor DeRosa, 2020 ROHS graduate, Royal Oak High School Principal Michael Giromini said in a statement Tuesday. As we all struggle to process this news, our thoughts go out to Taylor s family and friends. Taylor had an immensely positive impact on our community, and that influence will help us in our grieving process.
Officials Identify GVSU Student Found Dead on Allendale Campus
DeRosa was a first year student at GVSU and a recent graduate of Royal Oak High School.
Her body was discovered Saturday morning, Dec. 12, by a jogger near the intramural athletic fields, south of West Campus Drive.
Police are calling the death suspicious. An investigation is ongoing.
Kyra Newman, a childhood friend of DeRosa tells Fox 17,
I just want people to remember Taylor for the type of person that she was, and how giving she was, how loving she was, and how positive she always was. She really was a force to be reckoned with. Her and I are the same age, and it just makes it all the more real that this could happen to anyone at any time.
