More than 50% of Allegheny County’s adult population has been partially vaccinated for covid-19, local officials said Wednesday. Among residents older than 65, more than 78% have gotten at least one dose.
County officials encouraged people to sign up for appointments and get the vaccine as soon as possible.
“The fewer people that get vaccinated, the longer this virus will linger in our lives and the best way to defeat this virus is to continue the vaccine rollout as fast as possible,” said Dr. Debra Bogen, the county’s health director.

Allegheny County is “well into our fourth wave of cases here,” Dr. Debra Bogen, health director, said Wednesday.
Daily covid-19 case counts have set records for 2021 in the last several days, she said, with 418 new cases reported Wednesday. The test positivity rate is also nearly 9%, and hospitalizations are slowly increasing. The variant came up during Wednesday’s Allegheny County Health Department briefing.
As of the other day, 75 cases sent out by the health department came back confirmed as a coronavirus variant, and almost all of them are the B.1.1.7 variant.
Doctor Debra Bogen said the best way to protect yourself against any of these variants is by getting vaccinated. The health department is also happy with the current status of the new online vaccine system.
