For Biden and Netanyahu, Old Ties Face New Trials © Debbie Hill/PRESS POOL WASHINGTON When he was vice president, Joe Biden’s meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were known to sometimes escalate from a warm handshake and embrace to flaring tempers and pounding fists, all within the span of an hour. Biden told Netanyahu in a telephone call Wednesday that he expected “significant de-escalation” of the fighting by day’s end, according to the White House. But the prime minister came right back with a public declaration that he was “determined to continue” the Gaza operation “until its objective is achieved.”
