The idea started out as a
Star Wars pitch that Snyder made to Lucasfilm back in 2012 before Disney bought the company. The project went nowhere at that time (reportedly it was too dark), but Snyder and writer Kurt Johnstead (
300,
Atomic Blonde) plugged away at a script. When Snyder started working on
Army of the Dead, he also brought in one of his co-writer s, Shay Hatten. Snyder will direct the franchise-launching (hopefully) film, and along with his wife and partner, Deborah Snyder produce via their production company, Stone Quarry.
“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder told
A few years ago, Zack Snyder was interested in making a
Star Wars film, and even got as far as pitching Lucasfilm on the idea of a more mature movie set in George Lucas space opera-fuelled galaxy. The sale of the company to Disney scuppered any forward movement, but he has since re-tooled the idea into an original film called
Rebel Moon, which he ll now shoot for Netflix.
The story, written by Snyder and
300 s Kurt Johnstad (and turned into script form by the director alongside
Army Of The Dead s Shay Hatten) starts when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.

Zack Snyder has set his next project, “Rebel Moon,” at Netflix, which he will co-write, produce and direct, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
He is co-writing the script with “Army of the Dead” co-writer Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, who also co-write “300.” Snyder and Johnstad will both receive story credit. Snyder’s wife and producing partner, Deborah Snyder, will also produce alongside Wesley Coller for The Stone Quarry. Grand Electric’s Eric Newman is producing while Sarah Bowen will executive produce.
According to Netflix, the log line for “Rebel Moon” is: When a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, they dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand.
Shay Hatten and
Army of the Dead and
300, respectively. He and his wife and regular collaborator
Deborah Snyder will produce. THR describes the story as follows:
“The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.”
The project will also mark a reunion for Snyder and
Scott Stuber, the head of original films at Netflix. Stuber was Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production at Universal Pictures back in 2004 when Snyder crossed over from music video-directing with his first (and arguably still best) movie
