Sarasota Opera returns with a ‘Happy Deception’
A new Sarasota Opera season gets underway this weekend with the opening of Rossini’s one-act comic opera “The Happy Deception.” Soprano Hanna Brammer stars as the Duchess Isabella, who disappears and washes ashore in a small mining town, where she is taken in and cared for by a kindly miner, played by bass/baritone Alexander Charles Boyd (Brammer’s real-life husband). Tenor Christopher Bozeka plays her grieving husband, Duke Bertrando. The company also includes bass Joshua DeVane and baritone Joseph Beutel. Artistic Director Victor DeRenzi leads a smaller-than-usual orchestra and Martha Collins is the stage director. Tony nominee returns to Asolo Rep
Asolo Repertory Theatre is welcoming back audiences for a weekend of outdoor concerts by two-time Tony nominee Laura Osnes, who made her Sarasota debut in the pre-Broadway run of “Bonnie & Clyde” in 2010. She also starred on Broadway in “Grease,” “Cinderella,” “South Pacific” and “Bandstand.” Osnes, who was seen in the recent Hallmark Channel movie “A Royal Holiday,” plans to perform some of her favorite theater music and songs from the shows in which she has appeared. Concerts are at 7 p.m . Friday and Saturday at Asolo Rep’s Terrace Theatre, 5555 N. Tamiami Trail. Seating will follow social distancing guidelines, temperatures will be taken and masks are required. Dennis McSorley of Vermont will perform “Box of Squirrels,” about the early experience of a teacher in an inner-city New York school and how it shaped his life.
