At their executive committee meeting Wednesday, St. Joseph County commissioners discussed permanently returning to in-person board meetings. The board plans to meet in-person Tuesday for the first time since fall 2020.
To maintain the option of meeting electronically, however, commissioners must approve a state of emergency resolution. Such a measure gives public bodies the option of continuing to meet over platforms such as Zoom.
Commissioners had a lengthy discussion and most agreed they prefer to return to in-person meetings, a standing format. However, they acknowledged not everyone feels comfortable enough yet to attend an on-site gathering and would prefer another option.

Removal of decades-old restrictive covenants assigned to property in Centreville could spur economic growth in the county seat.
Zoning administrator Doug Kuhlman told county commissioners at their executive committee meeting last week the covenants were put in place by a committee that no longer exists.
At their meeting Tuesday, commissioners approved an ordinance that removes the covenants.
Kuhlman said the property lies within Centreville’s industrial park, a 120-acre piece of land south of Main Street on the east side of town.
The impetus for the change stems from two potential tenants interested in developing at the industrial park property, Kuhlman said.
When aides to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva wanted to build a helicopter landing pad near the sheriff’s home, they sought help from a familiar face.
J. Isaac Gonzalez, a former sheriff’s deputy, now works for the parent company of the Southern California Gas Co. The utility owns a plot of land on a hill above Villanueva’s La Habra Heights house that sheriff’s officials decided was a suitable spot for a helicopter to land in an emergency.
“Sounds easy,” Gonzalez texted to a Sheriff’s Department lieutenant who had pressed him to get the gas company’s approval for the project.
