Business, labor unite for passage of refundable gas tax

by Joe Mueller, The Center Square  | May 04, 2021 02:00 PM Print this article If you’re good at keeping receipts and filing for refunds, the proposed gas tax in Missouri won’t cost you a penny. If you’re not that organized, Senate Bill 262 will raise the tax on a gallon of gasoline by 2.5 cents starting in October. It will increase 2.5 cents a gallon in each fiscal year until it reaches an additional 12.5 cents a gallon on July 1, 2025. “With this particular bill, I believe it makes both sides happy,” said bill sponsor Dave Schatz, R-Sullivan and Senate President Pro Tem, during a Transportation Committee hearing. “I believe it allows those who believe in infrastructure to (support it). Those who prefer not to can get a refund.”

Defeat of gambling bill likely dooms legislative push against gray market machines

By Rudi Keller Missouri Independent The Missouri Senate has defeated a three-pronged effort to expand gambling in Missouri while suppressing unregulated devices that offer cash prizes to players. The vote that defeated the bill may have been the last chance this legislative session to address the proliferation of devices that some prosecutors have attacked as illegal and that others have refused to file charges over. “I am disappointed Senate Bill 98 reached an impasse on the Senate floor last night,” the sponsor, state Sen. Denny Hoskins, said in a statement released after Tuesday s vote. Hoskins, R-Warrensburg, accused casino companies and companies placing the “gray market” machines in bars, convenience stores and other retail locations of working to undermine his bill.

Hoskins said in a statement. “This gesture in no way equals the many contributions of our military families, but it does allow all of us to express our gratitude and let military children know they are in our hearts and prayers.”
