Will Joe Biden meet Xi Jinping? China awaits clues to future of US relations

HONG KONG, Jan 23 (SCMP): As US President Joe Biden takes the helm, he will need to reckon with a very different China than the country he dealt with as vice-president more than four years ago. The new White House has signalled that Biden’s initial telephone calls to world leaders will be first to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, then to other US partners and allies to “rebuild those relationships and to address the challenges and threats we’re facing”, as White House press secretary Jen Psaki put it on Wednesday. Given that “threats” perceived during the Donald Trump administration had included China’s ruling Communist Party, it raises the question of whether early talks between Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are feasible and could help fix a relationship at a 40-year low on nearly all fronts.

EWC Insights: China Seminar featuring Denny Roy on China s Plan for Peace with America

featuring Senior Fellow, East-West Center Chinese officials are describing the current relationship between the United States and the People s Republic of China as the worst since the two countries established official diplomatic relations in 1979.  Yet Beijing also clearly wants to bring the relationship back from what many commentators are describing as a new cold war.  Beijing is sending the new Biden Administration signals as to how to restore a more cooperative and less hostile relationship.  This seminar will survey the main points of China s pitch, and how the US government is likely to react.  The situation is complicated by both the structure of the international system and by the domestic politics in each country; China and the United States are two major powers competing for influence over the same region, and both governments are also playing to audiences at home who expect success from their own leaders.

The South China Sea Could Be the Arena for the Next World War

Accidental war is rare, but not impossible. Here s What You Need to Remember: China and America don t trust each other and tensions are still a problem. With each vying to long-term dominance in the South China Sea, here are three ways things could go bad. It’s easy to imagine an even more serious confrontation in the SCS.  Another accidental collision would be bad enough, but if a scenario developed similar to that of the downing of KAL 007, with a Chinese fighter jock actually opening fire on an American plane, the situation could get ugly very quickly.  And if an American pilot fired upon a Chinese plane, the reaction of the Chinese public could become too much for Beijing to reasonably handle.
