SFMO Urges Practicing Good Fire Safety Habits With Christmas Trees Tuesday, December 22, 2020 To help reduce the risk of home fires, the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance and the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office urges Tennesseans to be mindful of fire safety when it comes to Christmas trees.  “Tennesseans should not lose focus on the importance of fire safety during the holiday season,” said TDCI Assistant Commissioner for Fire Prevention Gary Farley. “Taking the time to water a Christmas tree or checking that an electrical outlet is not overloaded with Christmas lights could make the difference between life and death later on.” 

Solomon named new city fire chief

Solomon named new city fire chief Officials with the city of Oak Ridge have selected Travis Solomon as its new fire chief. He was sworn in by City Manager Mark Watson during the Monday night s Oak Ridge City Council meeting. Solomon, who previously served as Oak Ridge Fire Department fire marshal, has served as interim fire chief since former Chief Darryl Kerley’s departure in August. Solomon begins this role immediately.  “Oak Ridge has always been the model and leading fire service. I want to continue that and enhance the services we provide to better our ability to serve the public,” Solomon stated in a city news release.

In that role, he oversaw many procedures including inspections, plans review, fire investigations, and public education activities, the press release said.

Tennessee State Fire Marshal s Office Urges Tennesseans To Focus on Fire Safety Ahead of Winter s Arrival

Wednesday, December 16, 2020 | 08:00am NASHVILLE – While winter brings traditional holiday festivities such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the season’s cold weather also poses enhanced fire-related risks to Tennessee homeowners. During winter, fire deaths increase by almost 75 percent across the Volunteer State, according to state fire data. Heating equipment is the leading cause of home fire deaths nationally and the second leading known cause in Tennessee. Ahead of the first day of winter (Dec. 21) and Christmas (Dec. 25), the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI) and the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) remind Tennesseans to focus on fire safety in order to help reduce home fires and save lives this winter.
