However, Dr Denis McCauley, Chair of the GP Committee of the Irish Medical organisation says figures in Derry and Strabane show a surge of the virus in the under 40s which he says is filtering into North Donegal. Liz Canavan, assistant secretary general at the Department of the Taoiseach, said people can afford to be “cautiously optimistic” but they need to “stay vigilant”. “We need a bit more time to ensure that those who are most vulnerable are vaccinated and a higher proportion of the broader population is vaccinated,” Ms Canavan said.
