Updated: May 12, 2021, 10:10 am © Shutterstock Feed Dundee United goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet. Deniz Mehmet has enjoyed his run between the sticks with Dundee United No 1 Benjamin Siegrist sidelined. Now the Tangerines’ goalkeeper is aiming to prove he can do the job full time next season. Deniz has worn the gloves with distinction in Siegrist’s absence, with the Swiss stopper ruled out with a wrist injury. The 28-year-old has started United’s last five games in both the league and the Scottish Cup – one of his most consistent stints in the starting XI. He doesn’t know what the future holds but, with Siegrist attracting transfer interest and having just a year to run on his deal, Deniz is out to show he can be relied on next term.

When Micky Mellon was unveiled as Dundee United boss not many would have predicted he’d have them one game away from a Scottish Cup Final. For the man himself, though, that doubt was part of the challenge in his first season in the Tannadice dugout – and he isn’t done yet. Not content with tomorrow’s semi-final against Hibs, Mellon wants to take his Terrors team back to Hampden on May 22 for the final and add his name to a list of legends. Only Ivan Golac in 1994 and Peter Houston in 2010 have won the Scottish Cup as a United manager, not even legendary gaffer Jim McLean was able to achieve it in 22 years at the helm.

When Micky Mellon fielded a vastly altered, youthful side for Dundee United’s Premiership fixture at Kilmarnock on Wednesday evening, he was opening himself up to the slings and arrows of criticism. The Dundee United boss maintains he picked a team which he believed could win at Rugby Park, yet it would be churlish to suggest that selecting several raw kids however talented they may be and fringe players did not lessen their chances of emerging with three points.
