The Prosperity Line Increasing poverty and the declining middle class in India
A report released in March by the Pew Research Center in Washington D.C. estimates that the number of people living below the poverty line in India increased by 75 million last year due to the ongoing pandemic of Covid-19. That is about 60% of the worldwide increase in people living below the $2 a day poverty line.
The consequences of the pandemic and lockdown are expected to reduce the number of middle-income people in India by 32 million, which is again 60% of the decline in the number of middle-income people worldwide, earning between $10 and $20 a day.

“It is recommended that an expert committee be set up to arrive at an informed decision on the level at which the poverty line should be set,” planning minister Singh said in response to a question in Rajya Sabha.

The Tendulkar Committee had in 2011-12 estimated poverty lines and poverty ratio based on the monthly per capita consumption expenditure.
Government has recommended setting up an expert committee to determine the poverty line in India after the Arvind Panagariya-led task force failed to arrive at a consensus, planning minister Rao Inderjit Singh said.
