Using unique markings to positively identify humpback whales

Humpback whales -Timantha and Elmo in a double breach – Photo Trish Franklin Southern Cross University marine researchers have successfully developed a process that will allow them to more accurately identify one humpback whale from another. It involves a detailed compilation of photographic images of all-natural marks on an individual humpback whale that are then catalogued and investigated, using multi-feature artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to match each whale’s individual markings. According to lead researcher Dr Trish Franklin, it’s comparable to using human face recognition technology for the identification of an individual humpback whale. The paper in the Journal of Cetacean Management and Research aims to manage the potential for misidentification of individual mammals and to contribute to development of advanced AI algorithm photo-matching technologies.

Should a referee score a fight? - Boxing News

Should a referee score a fight? Simon Euan Smith examines the issue of whether a referee is in the best place to judge a fight IN his editorial last year, “The Bog of Eternal Stench” (BN October 22), discussing the problems in scoring bouts, Matt Christie wrote: “An eternal debate is the issue of point of view. Who really has the best view?” My mind went back to 1968, when I attended a “Boxing Brains Trust,” chaired by former BN editor Gilbert Odd. From the audience I asked the panel (which included British and Commonwealth bantam champion Alan Rudkin) their views on the relative merits of referee only or referee plus judges. Gilbert had no doubts – the referee moves around the ring, whereas a judge is watching from one fixed position. At the time, major bouts in Britain couldn’t be televised “live,” and Gilbert said: “You go to a fight, then watch it on TV the next night – it’s a different fight.” He was strongly in favour of “referee only.”

Anthony Fowler wants fights with Sergio Garcia, Ted Cheeseman in 2021

Photo by Richard Sellers/PA Images via Getty Images British junior middleweight Anthony Fowler has had a serious of get-well and tune-up style bouts since his Mar. 2019 loss to Scott Fitzgerald, and he’s got one more of that sort coming Feb. 20 when he faces Jorge Fortea on the Avanesyan-Kelly show, which will stream live on DAZN. But at 29, the time is now for Fowler (13-1, 10 KO) to get back to something more serious if he’s going to do it, and he’s got his sights set on a possible European title fight with Spain’s Sergio Garcia if or when he gets past Fortea. And it’s worth noting that (1) Fowler knows it’s time to step up, and (2) he won’t overlook Fortea, another Spaniard.
