Amarillo districts see STAAR test results after COVID-impacted year

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) announced that the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, tests would not be given for the 2019-20 school year.  However, as the pandemic continued, TEA made the decision for districts to give the test in the 2020-21 school year, “in order to provide critically important information about individual student learning that teachers and parents can use to help students grow,” officials said at the time.  The results from the 2020-21 STAAR/EOC tests were recently released statewide, giving individuals the chance to see the pandemic’s impact on learning.

The Economist: Falling STAAR

Business Wednesday, June 30, 2021 The Texas Education Agency (TEA) recently released results of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) for spring 2021. (See https://tea.texas.gov/sites/default/files/2021-staar-analysis-presentati. for a summary.) The tests cover mathematics and reading for grades 3–8 as well as writing and science for some grades, 8th grade social studies, and high school end-of-course exams in Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, and US History. The results indicate abysmal outcomes pretty much across the board when compared to 2019, as districts struggled to deal with disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The numbers of students not performing at grade level escalated for almost every subject area and grade, reversing generally improving trends in recent years. For mathematics, the percentage of students meeting standards was only 35%, down from 50% in 2019. Some grade levels were particularly hard hit, with only 25% of grade

SMCISD testing results mirror statewide trends

Wednesday, June 30, 2021 Test results for the 2021 Spring State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness showed declines across the state, especially in mathematics, according to results released Monday by the Texas Education Agency.  San Marcos Consolidated ISD was not immune from statewide STAAR result trends. In mathematics, scores show a majority of SMCISD students in third-eighth grades did not meet readiness standards. Scores in the approaches, meets and masters performance levels all declined from spring 2019 results the last year STAAR testing was administered.  SMCISD Superintendent Dr. Michael Cardona said he was disappointed that the TEA and U.S. Department of Education unnecessarily mandated standardized testing during a pandemic.
