The Texas Tech Defense Could Look Significantly Different in 2021
The Texas Tech defense gave up nearly identical points per game through Big 12 conference play in 2019 and 2020. That s really the only defensive stat that matters, but there s another one that s pretty striking. The Red Raiders defense gave up 365 yards per game through the air against Big 12 teams in 2019. In 2020, they erased 142 yards per game and only gave up 223 yards a contest.
That s a big jump. That s with mostly the same quarterbacks on the opposing sidelines from one year to the next.
The rush defense regressed a bit but the totals are undeniable. The Red Raiders gave up a staggering 538 yards per game in Big 12 play in 2019 and 36 points per game. In 2020, they gave
Texas Tech Lands 5 on the All-Big 12 Teams
With the close of the regular season last week, the Big 12 has announced it s postseason football awards, including the 2020 All-Big 12 teams.
Breece Hall and Mike Rose from Iowa State were offensive and defensive players of the year respectively and Matt Campbell won coach of the year. For the complete list of players of the year, you can go here because the Red Raiders were shut out of the awards. They did however get four onto the first team, the first time that has happened in over a decade.
Junior offensive lineman Jack Anderson, sophomore wide receiver Erik Ezukanma, sophomore punter Austin McNamara and senior Zech McPhearson were all featured on the conference’s first-team. Junior offensive lineman Dawson Deaton was a second-team selection. McNamara and Ezukanma are slated to return for next season while Jack Anderson has already announced his intention to enter the NFL Draft. McPhearson is currently undecided.
More Than a Dozen Offensive Coordinator Candidates for Texas Tech
With David Yost officially out at Texas Tech, the search for a new offensive coordinator is officially underway.
Head coach Matt Wells will speak to the media about his plan on signing day, Wednesday, December 16th, but for now, all fans have to go on is Texas Tech Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt saying he wants to get back to the aggressive, throw-it-down-the-field offense that Texas Tech is known for.
There are obviously some names that jump right off the page and will get to those, but I want to dispel one before we start the list: Art Briles. There s a less than zero percent chance that Wells would make the decision to bring Briles onto the Texas Tech coaching staff as the offensive coordinator. Leave his baggage at the door; Wells wouldn t invite the clown show that the scenario would create into his program.
