The Memorial football team missed the postseason in 2020 because of a loss in its final game, but turned the page this summer.
The Minutemen won the Edgewood ISD Passing League championship June 28. Memorial defeated Medina Valley in the title game with a touchdown pass at the end for its eighth win in nine games.
“The guys we have only played six games last year,” Memorial coach Kemmie Lewis said, “so it’s still pretty much like the first time they’re playing on varsity. They’re still learning about playing on that level and knowing their role.”

The first game of Iowa Stateâs 2020 season was also against the Louisiana Raginâ Cajuns. Billy Napierâs team traveled to Ames, Iowa and defeated the Cyclones 31-14. ISU quarterback Brock Purdy was 16-of-35 for 145 yards with one interception. Running back Breece Hall tallied 103 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Xavier Hutchinson, ISUâs leading receiver in 2020, had four catches for 43 yards.
UL forced two turnovers and committed only two penalties.
The win began Louisianaâs dream season that included one blemish at the hands of fellow Sun Belt school and eventual top-15 team Coastal Carolina.
