Step back in time: Duthie Park Winter Gardens © Courtesy Roddie Reid The David Welch Winter Gardens in Duthie Park is one of the best-loved spots for the people of the Granite City. For generations, the glasshouses and hothouses have offered an exotic escape in the heart of Aberdeen – especially during the grey and dark winter months. Readers Letters: Keep distance on park visits

by Readers Letters 25/02/2021, 12:13 pm As it was a sunny day my wife and I decided to go for a walk in Duthie Park in Aberdeen. We managed to get a parking spot at the Polmuir Road entrance. We walked through the park gates and 50 metres later we about turned and made a rapid return to our car. There was NO attempt at social distancing. There were family groups stood together within two metres of each other. People need to get focused. This is how Covid-19 spreads even in the outdoors. A Riddel, Bridge of Don. Pension insult A milestone in my life arrived from the department of pensions. It said as I will be 80 years old this week, they are awarding me 25p per week on my state pension.

How did our council come to this decision in these trying times? Did they ask residents of Aberdeen? How much “buckshee” money have they got in their kitty? We are all waiting for these trying times to end, but surely the council should have their eyes on the ball (and not helping a football club finance a new stadium). Some priorities I think they should look at are swimming pools that have been mothballed or shut, sports facilities, and aid for the Friends of Uptown Baths – look how singled-handed the Friends of Duthie Park managed to produce a finished product.

From August, parents and carers will now be able to access up to 1,140 funded hours of early learning and childcare (ELC). Schools and nurseries across the region have been redesigned, refurbished and in some cases rebuilt to ready them for an increase in provision. A requirement set down by Holyrood required local authorities to provide up to 1,140 hours of free childcare for all three and four-year-olds by August last year.
