CLACKAMAS COUNTY, Ore. Clackamas County’s Budget Committee tried to strip Commissioner Mark Shull of his salary this week. Shull has come under fire in recent weeks for racist and Islamophobic posts he made on his Facebook page.
Shull has apologized for those posts to his fellow commissioners, constituents and he met with local religious leaders to formally apologize. With humility and sincerity, I ask for the good people of the Muslim community to consider my request for forgiveness,” Shull said at the meeting on Jan. 18.

Jama executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Unite Oregon will join Oregon s legislative assembly ahead of a session that is expected to take aim at advancing issues of racial justice and fixing systemic inequities further exposed and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Leaders in Oregon s Muslim community have rejected an embattled Clackamas County Commissioner s plans for outreach and apologies saying his hate speech requires an immediate resignation.
Newly-elected Commissioner Mark Shull referred to Muslim Americans as invaders and savages as recently as mid-2019 in his Facebook posts and called for military force against them, including extermination outside the lands of Islam.
And while the former lieutenant colonel told The Oregonian he plans to meet with Muslim leaders to build understanding, the most prominent officials in that community say they haven t heard from him.

Councilors also will be able to add their names individually to the letter; West abstains from vote
During a special Wilsonville City Council meeting Thursday, Jan. 14, the council agreed to allow Mayor Julie Fitzgerald to sign a letter calling for the resignation of Clackamas County Commissioner Mark Shull for Islamophobic, transphobic, anti-immigrant and racist comments he made on social media that have surfaced this week.
Fitzgerald and three councilors voted to approve the motion while Councilor Ben West abstained from the vote.
Lake Oswego Mayor Joe Buck distributed the letter this week to Clackamas County representatives and many of these elected officials already had signed the letter by the time of the meeting.
