That season culminated in a match against Sheffield Wednesday on the final day, who were also in the relegation scrap. The Eagles needed to avoid defeat to secure safety and they did just that with a 2-2 draw in one of the most pivotal games in the club’s history.
Despite surviving on the pitch, the club faced liquidation due to its financial problems and because no one was willing to buy Selhurst Park - the club’s stadium.

Former Crystal Palace striker Glenn Murray recently announced that he has retired from football aged 37, bringing an end to an almost 20-year career.
Murray, who played 125 games for the Eagles and scored 47 goals after signing from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2011, sat down with the club to reflect on his time in south London and discuss his post-retirement plans.
The decision to retire was a straightforward one for Murray, as he explains: “I just sat down with my family and felt as though the time was right. The last two years haven’t been particularly good ones, especially without fans as well - that’s added into the mix.
“Within a whisker of time, Palace were going down and Huddersfield, who were also in the mix, were safe. Then suddenly, in that instant, you get the break from the Hopkin handball, the ball goes down to the other end and Dougie Freedman scores the goal.
“There was that story - caretaker manager flung into it, the Hopkin handball [Hawthorne doesn t toe the party line, despite his company in this interview], the significance of the goal in that it was going to keep Palace up and send Huddersfield down. So they’re a challenge for a commentator because there are so many things that run through your mind the instant that goal is scored.”
