BROWNSVILLE, Brooklyn (WABC) The family of a woman who was attacked by a man with a machete while she walked her dog in Brooklyn is speaking out and grateful their loved one is OK.
The attacker was shot and killed by police Tuesday night as the incident unfolded on Dumont Avenue and Strauss Street in Brownsville.
Savannah Cruz nearly lost her mother to the crazed man. Darlene Duda, 50, was nearly hacked to death as she walked the family dog. I m just so, so, so happy that my mom is alive, just so happy, Cruz said Wednesday.
It happened around the corner from their home when Duda was struck from behind.
Cops walked with Cruz, 20, to a spot a block away from her Brooklyn home where her mom, Darlene Duda, 50, and pit bull Honey were drenched in blood after a machete slashing by a frenzied teenager whose Tuesday night attack ended with a cop’s bullet to the chest.

Police say Samuel Lazaro, 18, attacked a woman, 50, and her dog with a machete in Brownsville section of Brooklyn on Tuesday evening
Lazaro had been seen acting erratically and damaging parked cars prior to machete attack, according to the New York Police Department
He refused to put down his weapon and charged at cops, one of whom fatally shot him in the chest, according to witnesses and police
Darlene Duda, 50, suffered deep cuts to her head and both hands; her pit bull, Honey, 5, was sliced in the shoulder; both woman and dog were stable

A machete-wielding man was fatally shot by police in Brooklyn on Tuesday evening after he attacked a woman walking a dog and charged at officers, officials said.

Police say a machete-wielding man is dead after approaching officers and injuring a woman Tuesday night.
Police say the man was chasing people and damaging people’s cars near Dumont Avenue at around 6:10 p.m.
A woman, who was walking her dog, was attacked by the man and suffered deep cuts on her left hand, according to police.
Police say the woman’s dog was also attacked by the man. The woman was taken to a local hospital and the dog was taken to a local clinic.
When encountering the man and asking him to drop the machete, the suspect disobeyed and approached officers, according to police.
