A Limerick truck driver who imported over €1.6 million of ketamine, MDMA and cocaine has been jailed for three and a half years.
Alyvydus Simkus (48), who has no other serious criminal convictions, told gardaí that he was paid £50 (€56) to take the drugs into the country.
Detective Garda Ronan Doolin told Garret Baker BL, prosecuting, that gardaí received confidential information that drugs would be imported into the State on the date in question.
Det Gda Doolin said the truck Simkus was driving was stopped in Dublin Port having arrived in a ferry from the UK. He was directed to go New Customs House where his truck was searched.

Liam Vickers (23) also threatened the victim s roommate when they attempted to intervene.
He instructed the victim to delete his phone number and text messages from her phone before he left her home.
Vickers of Swifts Grove, Clonshaugh, Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm in an apartment in Dublin city centre in the early hours of September 30, 2017.
He has two previous convictions for driving while holding a mobile phone and failure to appear.
The court heard his father pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to murdering his mother in 2009.
Judge Elma Sheahan had previously adjourned sentencing, ordering that Vickers follow all directions of the probation service and directing that drug testing be carried out each month.

Anthony McDonald (22) was arrested after customs officials intercepted the package containing the drugs which he had ordered online under the name “Mr Smith”.
McDonald of Amiens Street, Dublin pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of cannabis for sale or supply at his former address of Cromcastle Court, Kilmore, on August 24, 2019. He has no previous convictions.
