Efforts to “Save The Depot” in Charles City are ready to enter its next phase.
Mayor Dean Andrews says the commission to preserve the historic Milwaukee Road railroad depot has raised about $343,000 of the $350,000 projected costs. He says construction to move the depot to the corner of North Grand Avenue and 11th Avenue is expected to begin next month.
Andrews says donations are still being accepted and plans are being made for an open house celebration in June. The historic depot was originally built in 1912 and was in danger of being demolished over liability concerns. The railroad company was going to spend almost $34,000 for take the building down, but instead pledged that money towards the “Save the Depot” project.

The Charles City community is excited to welcome home several local soldiers on Saturday in a “Drive By Parade”.
The nine soldiers are: Marco Concepcion, Dave Dejongoy, Austin Ferch, Jaden Foster, Mitchel Fox, Nick Jacobs, Dallas Nehls, Conor Sherman, & Elizabeth White.
Charles City Mayor Dean Andrews promoted the event on Friday morning.
The event will take place on Saturday April 17th from 10am until 11am at the warehouse across from Dollar General in Charles City. The soldiers will be “stationed” on a flatbed trailer at 600 N. Main. All citizens are invited to “drive by”, honk your horns, and deliver an America’s hometown salute. You are invited to decorate your vehicles with patriotic colors if you would like, but the big thing is to salute these Charles City graduates and welcome them back home.
