Tragedy grips Wits university after three suicides in three weeks
By Lesego Makgatho
Three Wits University students have died from suicide in the past three weeks.
A statement released by the Wits Universityâs Student Representative Council highlighted the issue of mental health and its impact on the student body.
The SRC attributed the suicides to the pressure placed on students by the university. Wits SRC president Mpendulo Mfeka said the misconception was that these students took their own lives because of academic pressure.
âThis is not the case with this particular three as they were doing quite well academically. The LLB final year student had marks way above 70%, the BA dramatic arts student was in the final year, and the third student was doing a Masterâs in pharmacy. They were doing well and they were well funded,â Mfeka said.
