SAN DIEGO
Residents and community leaders throughout San Diego County on Sunday were mourning the death of Father Joe Carroll, a Catholic priest who spent some 40 years providing and enhancing services for the area’s homeless population.
Carroll, who died Saturday at the age of 80, was more commonly known as the “Hustler Priest,” a name that came from his fierce and relentless efforts to raise millions of dollars for homeless services in San Diego County.
His charity, now called Father Joe’s Villages, won awards for providing housing, food, health care, education, vocational training and other services to thousands of people annually.
