Indian River High senior selected for Senate youth program

February 28, 2021 The United States Senate Youth Program announced that high school students Augustus Laird Fadden of Frankford and Justin Xu of Hockessin will join Sen. Thomas R. Carper and Sen. Christopher A. Coons in representing Delaware during the 59th annual USSYP Washington Week, to be held Sunday to Wednesday, March 14 to 17. The two were selected from among the state’s top student leaders to be part of the 104-student national delegation. Each will also receive a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate study with encouragement to continue coursework in government, history and public affairs. Due to the pandemic, the 2021 program will be the inaugural virtual Washington Week, designed to be a highly interactive, exciting education and leadership forum for the nation’s most outstanding student leaders.

Bloodworth earns WIU scholarship FacebookTwitterEmail BETHALTO Civic Memorial High School senior Jenna Bloodworth of Bethalto has been awarded a Western Illinois University President’s Scholarship in conjunction with the Western Commitment Scholarship. Together, the scholarships cover four years of tuition, fees, a double residence hall room and standard board for eight semesters. “WIU provides me with the opportunity to double major, participate in an honors college, play in a Division I marching band, while not being too far from home,” Bloodworth said. At WIU Bloodworth plans to double major in nursing and Spanish. She also plans to get involved in the Honors program, marching band, campus ministry, intramural sports and foreign languages clubs.

Two Delaware students chosen for Senate Youth Program

Two Delaware high school students have been selected to participate in the 2021 U.S. Senate Youth Program. Augustus Laird Fadden of Indian River High School and Justin Xu of the Charter School of Wilmington will represent Delaware in the first-ever virtual Senate Youth Program, March 14-17. Fadden and Xu were chosen to represent the state by the Delaware Department of Education after being nominated by a teacher or principal. Nationwide, 104 student leaders (two from each state) were selected for the program and will each receive a $10,000 scholarship for undergraduate study. The U.S. Senate Youth Program aims to give participants a better understanding of the American political process and instill in them a lifelong commitment to public service.
