Mineral County planning for robust summer school program Mineral Daily News-Tribune Tribune Managing Editor KEYSER - Realizing that Mineral County’s students have been at a learning disadvantage due to the changes forced upon them by the pandemic, superintendent of schools Troy Ravenscroft said he is planning for a “robust” summer program to help students catch up. “We know there has been a loss of learning,” Ravenscroft told the Mineral County Board of Education this week. “We have to make that up.” Ravenscroft said money received through the CARES Act will be used to help beef up the county’s after-school program as soon as students are able to get back in the classroom, as well as the upcoming summer program.

Tribune Managing Editor KEYSER- Mineral County Schools employees are being sent an email with a form to fill out indicating whether they intend to take the COVID-19 vaccine when it arrives in the county. Superintendent of schools Troy Ravenscroft, himself quarantined at home this week after testing positive, said during the board of education meeting held by Zoom Tuesday that the West Virginia Department of Education “needs to know how many vials of vaccine to send to each district.” Ravenscroft said the vaccine “could be available as soon as the end of this month.” Ravenscroft also told the board members that he continues to work on the county’s re-entry plan so they can be ready to get kids back in school once it is safe.

Additonal COVID-19 deaths, cases reported in Mineral County

Dec 14, 2020 KEYSER, W.Va. — Five more Mineral County residents have died from COVID-19, the county health department reported Monday, raising the county toll to 52. Three of the dead resided at Piney Valley nursing home in Keyser, where 28 people have died since an outbreak that has infected 97 residents and 71 staff members began. Fifty residents and 59 staffers have recovered from the disease, per a news release. A 78-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman who were previously hospitalized also died of the coronavirus, the department reported. Since Nov. 19, 46 people have died in Mineral County, which has a population of slightly fewer than 27,000. Cases continued rising in the county over the weekend, with the health department reporting 1,727 Monday evening. There were 439 active cases and 38 deemed probable.
