Today in Blue Jays history: Rolen/Glaus trade

Today in Blue Jays history: Rolen/Glaus trade Share this story Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images Thirteen years ago today (time flies), January 12, 2008, in the middle of what had been very slow January for Blue Jay news, the Jays traded Troy Glaus to the Cardinals for Scott Rolen. As Hugo said in his post on the trade, each team was trading off a player who wanted out. Glaus was having foot troubles (plantar fasciitis), which, he felt, were made worse by playing on the carpet covered concrete at Rogers Centre. No one should be surprised that playing baseball on concrete might cause troubles? The new ‘carpet’ seems massively better than the old stuff. And this year, there is to be newer stuff (if they play in Rogers Centre. Troy had a lot of power. He hit 58 home runs in his two seasons with the Jays (even though he had only played 115 games in 2007).

Happy Birthday B J Ryan

Happy Birthday B.J. Ryan Share this story B.J. Ryan turns 45 today. Looking at his picture, he looks a lot like a former neighbor of mine, Scott. Off-topic, but I’m terrible with names. For a while there, I would relate them to a baseball player when trying to remember names. Unfortunately, the player I picked for Scott was a former pitcher Scott Terry, and I spent six months calling him Terry. But I digress. Digressing again, Scott was one of those guys that always had a get rich quick scheme going. At one point, he wanted to import Australian crayfish and raise them to sell to restaurants. Not surprisingly to anyone except for him, the Alberta government had this issue about bringing a new species into the province (see the Simpsons cane toad episode for a reason why).

Today in Jay History: Jays Trade for Troy Glaus

Today in Jay History: Jays Trade for Troy Glaus Share this story 15 Years Ago Well, it was made official on the 27th. We knew about it on Christmas Eve, back in the good old days when the Blue Jays would make some news for us to write about occasionally. Orlando Hudson and Troy Glaus and The trade was a surprise because the Jays had Corey Koskie, Shea Hillenbrand, and Eric Hinske for the corner infield spots. Koskie had been a free agent signing before the 2005 season, but he had a tough season, hitting .249/.337/.398, missing 60 games with injuries. But he had two years left on his contract. Koskie would be traded in early January to the Brewers for

Blue Jays Birthdays: Jim Clancy, Roy Howell and Jeremy Accardo

Blue Jays Birthdays: Jim Clancy, Roy Howell and Jeremy Accardo Share this story We have a trio of Blue Jays birthdays today. Jeremy Accardo turns 39. Clancy was an original Jay, picked up in the expansion draft in 1976. He was called up to the Jays in July of 1977, our first season. He would be a Blue Jay for 12 seasons, battling it out with Dave Stieb for the franchise lead in wins for much of that time. His best season as 1982 when he made 40 starts, had a 16-14 record (for a team that finished tied for last in the AL East), throwing 266.2 innings with a 3.71 ERA, and he made the All-Star team for the only time in his career.
