DA and ANC in Knysna clash over appointeeâs suitability

Cape Town - The DA in Knysna has rejected the appointment of a new director of Community Services for the municipality, claiming the new appointee, Sandile Ngqele, lacks senior managerial experience.
However, the ANC has disputed the claims and said the DA needed to go back to the drawing board and check their facts.
Knysna DA Constituency Head Dion George said Ngqeleâs appointment could result in a costly dispute for the municipality.
George said: âAt a Knysna Council meeting on April 29, the ANC and the KUC (Knysna Unity Congress) voted to appoint a director of Community Services despite councillors being presented with a report which found that the appointed candidate has three judgments and two defaults in a financial history screening report.

The DA is considering selling its headquarters in Bruma, Johannesburg, as the party faces a serious cash crunch ahead of the local government elections.
Party CEO Simon Dickinson confirmed that the DA is contemplating putting Nkululeko House, which was unveiled to much fanfare three years ago, on the market.

DA in Knysna axes councillor for voting with rival ANC

Cape Town - The DA in the Knysna municipality has axed one of its councillors following allegations she voted in favour with the ANC.
Lorraine Opperman, 73, was expelled from the party just three days after she voted with the ANC on a motion during a council meeting last Thursday.
Opperman had only been a councillor in ward 11 for 13 months after she was elected in a by-election in December, 2019. Previously she had been a Cope member who even stood as a candidate for ward five back in the 2016 municipal elections.

Corruption Watch wrote to the Presidency on 3 December 2020 urging the setting of a starting date for the Political Party Funding Act before 1 April 2021, in time for the local government elections. Otherwise, the transparency lobby group would go to court for an interdict to compel commencement.
“Corruption Watch welcomes the response from the Presidency at the end of 2020 confirming that, following consultations between the Department of Home Affairs and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the Act will be proclaimed on or before 1 April 2021,” it said on 9 January.
However, no further details could be obtained from the Presidency and a call to Home Affairs (the IEC falls into this portfolio) also failed to yield clarity.
