BUCKFIELD Without commenting on the direction of the leaderless town office, the Select Board met Wednesday in executive session for nearly 45 minutes after calling an emergency meeting, and then abruptly recessed until Thursday.
Chairwoman Tina Brooks would only say they had a good discussion, that they would reconvene the meeting Thursday and would have an attorney present.
The reason for the executive session was to deal with a personnel issue.

Buckfield is operating without a town manager following the resignation of John Andrews on Monday. BUCKFIELD Citing a “toxic environment,” Town Manager John Andrews resigned his position Monday after six months on the job.

The announcement was made following a one hour, 18 minute executive session to start Monday’s select board meeting. Chairwoman Tina Brooks announced the resignation and said the board would be hiring an interim town manager.
His resignation letter was not read at the meeting and the board did not vote on whether on not to accept the resignation.
In his letter, Andrews said his resignation was effective immediately and he stated that he wished the town and its citizens the best of luck. However, in the letter he expressed his frustration with the Select Board and the tremendous amount of extra work that was required to run the town.

BUCKFIELD The three-member Select Board struggled Thursday night on how to accept the resignation of Chairwoman Tina Brooks and questions about the 2021-22 budget.
Brooks announced Monday that she was resigning for a personal family matter. Her term ends June 30.
Working with Maine Municipal Association legal officials, Town Manager John Andrews drew up a timeline where Brooks could resign during the town elections June 8 with her replacement being elected that day on a separate ballot from other selectmen races that day.
Because Brooks is resigning, the procedure to fill out nominating papers can be shortened. That would save the town money by not requiring a second election, according to MMA.

Brooks suggested that she could stay until June 30, but Selectman Martha Catevenis pointed out that could be a problem for the town.
Catevenis’ term ends June 30, and town elections are not until sometime in July. That would leave the town with just one board member.
Brooks, first elected to the board in 2017, agreed to remain on the board until after the election and new officials are sworn in to keep at least two members on the board.
