“By setting strict rules on the App store that disadvantage competing music streaming services, Apple deprives users of cheaper music streaming choices and distorts competition”
-Executive Vice-President for Digital Margrethe Vestager
Story of the week: in a landmark decision, the European Commission issued a Statement of Objections against Apple over the music streaming case. This is a formal step in an EU antitrust investigation against Apple, which is also being scrutinised over its payment service Apple Pay.
The music streaming case was initiated by Spotify’s complaint that accused Apple of abusing of its market power to favour its own Apple Music app. The European Commission’s preliminary finding acknowledged the complaint, considering that Apple has a gatekeeping power since Apple devices are only able to download apps from the App Store.

In Malaysia, more women are participating in the cryptocurrency market, thanks to increased awareness about digital asset investing in general. Luno Malaysia, the country’s first digital asset exchange approved by the Securities Commission, revealed that 20% of its user base is female, up from 12% in 2019, with more than 60% of the pool aged between 30 and 39. Also, some 56% of these female investors prefer Bitcoin.
Scarlett Chai, Luno Malaysia’s marketing and partnerships lead, tells Digital Edge that the average transaction volume of its female users has increased from 6% to 15% of total transactions per month, indicating a positive trend of cryptocurrency investment among female users in Malaysia. This also shows that cryptocurrency is an accepted and established alternative investment option, especially among female investors.
KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 (Bernama): Digital Edge (Singapore) Holdings Pte Ltd (Digital Edge) has announced plans to expand its regional footprint to South Korea by entering into a definitive agreement to acquire Sejong Telecom’s data centre assets in an all-cash transaction.
Digital Edge is a leading data centre platform, established to transform the digital infrastructure in Asia and backed by Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners.
At closing, Digital Edge will acquire one data centre in Gangnam, Seoul and a Cable Landing Station facility in Centum City, Busan, according to a statement.
The addition of these strategic assets, including their associated operations and customers, marks the Company’s initial entry into the Korean market and further strengthens its regional platform.
Fraud and corruption are on the rise in the local corporate landscape. Can technology be used to help combat this issue?
According to the latest PwC Global Economic Crime and Fraud Survey, fraud cases have remained high in Malaysia since 2018, although there has been a marked decrease in other Southeast Asian countries during the same period. This is despite the fact that 45% of Malaysian organisations say they have dedicated programmes to address such crimes, which is 7% higher than the average in the region.
“When it comes to the readiness of Malaysian organisations to use technology to combat fraud, I would consider them ready but nowhere near where they should be in terms of adoption,” says Gerard McDonnell, SAS regional solution director for fraud and security.
