BATON ROUGE, La. - A bipartisan group of 44 attorneys general, including Louisiana s Jeff Landry, has written to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg urging him to drop company plans for a version of Instagram for children under the age of 13, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey announced Monday.
The attorneys general in the letter said they are concerned about social media s effects on the physical and emotional well-being of children, the potential for increased cyberbullying, possible vulnerability to online predators, and what they called Facebook s âcheckered record in protecting children on its platforms.
âIt appears that Facebook is not responding to a need, but instead creating one, as this platform appeals primarily to children who otherwise do not or would not have an Instagram account, said the letter, signed by the attorneys general of 40 states, the District of Columbia and three U.S. territories.

In a Monday letter addressed to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, a total of 44 US attorneys general urged Facebook to abandon its plans to launch a version of Instagram for children under the age of 13.
“The attorneys general urge Facebook to abandon these plans. Use of social media can be detrimental to the health and well-being of children, who are not equipped to navigate the challenges of having a social media account. Further, Facebook has historically failed to protect the welfare of children on its platforms,” the letter states, citing research into the effects of social media use on mental health in kids.

A bipartisan group of 44 attorneys general, including New York AG Letitia James, has written to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg urging him to drop company plans for a version of Instagram for children under the age of 13, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey announced Monday.
“I’m calling on @Facebook to abandon its plans to create a version of @Instagram for children under the age of 13. This is a dangerous idea that can be detrimental to children and put them directly in harm’s way,” James wrote on Twitter.
