FORMER GOVERNOR THORNBURGH PASSES AWAY; WOLF ORDERS FLAGS TO HALF-STAFF By John Smathers

Former Pennsylvania Governor Dick Thornburgh passed away today at a retirement community facility outside Pittsburgh, his son David said. The cause is not yet known.
Thornburgh served as the 41st governor of Pennsylvania from 1979 to 1987, and then as the U.S. Attorney General from 1988 to 1991. In his honor, Governor Tom Wolf ordered the U.S. and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania flags on all commonwealth facilities, public buildings and grounds fly at half-staff immediately.
“Governor Thornburgh served our commonwealth and our nation with pride and distinction,” said Wolf. “His calm, grounded leadership was a hallmark of his governorship, and was critical to guiding Pennsylvania through the tumultuous days following the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island. Former Pennsylvania Gov. Dick Thornburgh leaves behind a long legacy of accomplishments – serving as the state’s 41st governor, a delegate to the 1967 constitutional convention, U.S. attorney general and as under-secretary-general of the United Nations, among others.
“There was nothing on his to-do list that he didn’t check off,” said his oldest son, John Thornburgh. “So his life was full.”
John, who is the oldest of the former governor’s sons, reflected on some memorable moments in the life of his father who died Thursday at a Pittsburgh area retirement community of natural causes. He was 88.
