Jailed Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong was sentenced to 10 additional months in jail on Thursday for taking part in an unauthorized assembly.
Police had banned a vigil on June 4 last year citing coronavirus restrictions on group gatherings, but thousands defied authorities and proceeded to Victoria Park. The protesters were warned they were breaking the law.
Wong and three district councilors had pleaded guilty to knowingly taking part in an unauthorized assembly, and could have faced a maximum of five years in prison. Wong, 24, is already in jail after being convicted of illegal assembly in other protests and was sentenced to an additional 10 months in the district court on Thursday.

A Hong Kong court has convicted three people of rioting, jailing them for at least four years despite a lack of evidence that they played any role in the riot. This is the latest conviction since a higher court upheld the doctrine of “joint enterprise” in riot and unlawful assembly prosecutions earlier this year, vastly expanding the scope of both offenses to include people not directly placed at the scene of a protest. The District Court on Wednesday handed down jail sentences of at least four years to three people convicted of rioting in Tsuen Wan during anti-government protests in 2019 – even though the judge acknowledged there was no evidence they had any actual role in the riot.
US calls on Hong Kong to release vigil participants
AFP, WASHINGTON
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken yesterday called for the release of four Hong Kong democracy advocates who were jailed for participating in a vigil for victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre.
“The United States stands with the people of Hong Kong and rejects the sentencing of activists for attending a Tiananmen commemoration,” Blinken wrote on Twitter.
“All those imprisoned for nonviolent exercise of guaranteed freedoms should be freed immediately,” he added.

Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to 10 months in jail for participating in an unauthorised vigil marking the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.
The annual vigil, which has been held in Hong Kong since 1990, was banned for the first time last year by police citing virus measures.
Nevertheless, tens of thousands of people including activists, showed up.
The activists that attended, including Wong, were later charged by police.
Wong - aged 24 and Hong Kong s best-known activist internationally - is already in prison for a separate unauthorised assembly conviction under the country s restrictive national security law.
