Tasman District now has 33 farms practising full-season once-a-day milking rather than the traditional twice-a-day regime. That’s three more farms than last season. The other farm not fully compliant was graded as “serious non-compliant” due to “moderate ponding of effluent” after an irrigator malfunctioned. “This ponding occurred on the crest of steep sloping land where a small stream flowed at its toe,” the report says. “The slope of the land was enough to promote overland flow.” Farm staff immediately shut down the effluent system when the fault was found but not before “a small amount of effluent” entered the stream.

The objective was to build on top of the land rather than disturb it with earthworks. A top-quality synthetic turf had been used at the site as it was difficult to get grass to grow in the sandy soil.
Luz Zuniga/Stuff Turley said the turf was realistic. Māpua Wharf was a destination that was growing in popularity.

State Highway 1 in Marlborough is reopening and evacuated residents from three settlements have been told they can return home from lunchtime on Sunday.
But on the other side of the island, West Coast residents face heartache, with flood-ravaged streets and homes.
The Marlborough District Council said State Highway 1, including the Wairau River Bridge, was expected to reopen from midday on Sunday. All evacuated residents from Tuamarina, Spring Creek and the Lower Wairau can return to their homes from midday.
