The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering better and safer roads around the State including four priority upgrades to improve the West Tamar Highway, north of Legana.
These works are the first stage of a series of projects to improve the safety and efficiency of the West Tamar Highway, with the plans now out for public comment.
These upgrades will improve the lives of communities along the highway by making it safer and improving travel time reliability to and from Launceston.
The three projects completed this month (July) include:
widening the highway between McEwans Road and Waldhorn Drive;

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is proud to partner with the Federal Government and Telstra to improve Tasmania’s phone coverage as part of the most recent round of the $380 million national Mobile Black Spot Program.
This will see additional network infrastructure built to improve services for the communities of Bridgenorth, 22 kilometres north-west of Launceston, and Liena in the north-west of the state.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government wanted to increase the chance of success of these needed infrastructure upgrades and pledged contributions totalling $180,500 for the projects, of the total $690,900 build cost. We are pleased that our kickstart funding has helped to win the funding.

The safety of staff, prisoners and the community remains a top priority for the Tasmanian Liberal Government and I welcome today’s discussions I had with unions regarding our prison system.
These talks were constructive with a number of suggestions and matters raised that we are committed to addressing, including in relation to recruitment, staff safety and supports, and training.
While we have invested significantly in our prison system – with more than 200 extra Correctional Officers in our prison system since 2016, including 79 in 2020 alone – we know more needs to be done, and we are committed to doing it.
