When Harold Brasington came back from the 1933 Indianapolis 500 and declared that he wanted to build a superspeedway in rural South Carolina, his friends and family thought it was an elaborate joke at best and utterly ridiculous at worst. Then he purchased an old cotton field and they thought he might be insane. Undeterred, the former dirt track racer had the vision and determination to make a far-fetched dream a reality.
Correctly calculating that the new sport of stockcar racing was on the ascendancy, Brasington gambled on being able to attract a race if he built a circuit. Working at his trademark small desk at home, he drew up plans for the new superspeedway. DARLINGTON, S.C. (WMBF) â A former NFL player is returning home to Darlington this weekend and heâs exchanged his football pads for a car jack.
Lamar native Marshall McFadden is making a pit stop at Darlington Raceway for NASCARâs spring race weekend, serving as a member of the pit crew for Chip Ganassi Racing.
McFadden is known for winning in Darlington County. He helped lead Lamar High School to three state football championships before playing in the NFL for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders and the St. Louis Rams

The NASCAR Xfinity Series returns to action this week at Darlington Raceway where Chase Briscoe and Brandon Jones won last season. Jeb Burton captured his first series victory two weeks ago at Talladega Superspeedway, continuing his best start to a season. AJ Allmendinger will start this week s race from pole with Austin Cindric on the outside of the front row. This will be the 62nd time the Xfinity series has competed at Darlington, and the track has produced 33 different winners. Only in one race since 2005 has a driver won when starting outside of the top 10. The last time that happened was Briscoe s win last season when he started 11th. There have been seven different Xfinity race winners so far in 2021 and five of them are already locked into the playoffs. Brandon Brown currently occupies the 12th and final playoff spot with Riley Herbst 15 points behind in 13th.
