Leyburn chef Sean Wrest is head chef at Roots, in York, which is owned by Tommy Banks and has just been awarded the coveted star. He said: I have such a great team down there who all work exceptionally hard. Like the rest of the industry, we have had to overcome a host of obstacles because of Covid and this award is down to them and I could not be prouder of them.”

One stop shop of support and advice for people facing redundancy

A COUNCIL has put together a package of online help and advice for people facing redundancy or looking for a career change. Darlington Borough Council has created the web page to offer a one-stop shop style summary of advice and available training. It includes details of free training, as well as courses and advice to suit everyone, regardless of experience, education or career plan. • The council’s learning and skills team offers free online courses that can help prepare people for the world of work or a career change.

Newsquest apprentices work with the community

One of our apprentices, Erin Gaskell, 24, began her career with The Mail in September 2019 and has achieved a number of gold standard results throughout her apprenticeship journey. She said: I m currently studying for my NCTJ multimedia diploma with the help of Darlington College. I spend one day a week taking part in online lessons alongside other apprentices and community reporters from different organisations around the UK - and thanks to the global pandemic, we all got to experience the highs and lows of virtual exams together!

FIVE years ago this week, Major Tim Peake blasted off into orbit on board the Soyuz space capsule on his way to becoming the first British astronaut to join the crew of the International Space Station (ISS). The Russian rocket launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in front of the world’s media following weeks of preparation. Major Peake, 43, made history as the first fully British professional astronaut to be employed by a space agency. In his final message to his followers on Twitter at the time, Major Peake said: “Last tweet before launch – GO for flight! Thanks for all the good luck messages – phenomenal support!”
