York ruling group accused of subverting democracy in furious row

A furious row has broken out over the way City of York Council is run. York’s Labour group has accused the ruling Lib Dems of ‘acting unlawfully’ and ‘subverting democracy’. They argue that the Lib Dems – who are in a ruling coalition with the Greens – have ‘voted through a majority of its own councillors onto key council committees to block scrutiny of how it is running the council’. New Labour group leader, Cllr Pete Kilbane said: “The council under Liberal Democrat control is establishing a pattern of acting unlawfully to avoid transparency and now is even going to the lengths of subverting democracy.

City of York Council gives huge thanks to volunteers

AHEAD of Volunteers’ Week 2021 and as we emerge from the pandemic, City of York Council has given a huge thank you to thousands of Covid volunteers in the city, who will now all be managed by York Centre for Voluntary Service (CVS). With the Government’s roadmap progressing and as we move out of lockdown, new arrangements for covid volunteering will be in place from the start of Volunteers’ Weeks on June 1. As part of this change, all volunteering for roles related to the pandemic will be managed by York CVS. Anyone who signed up for Covid volunteering through the council can now opt in to sign up with the CVS.

Visit York targets staycationers in £61k #LoveYork campaign

SCENES of York and its attractions will be beamed across the small screen in a bid to promote the city as a staycation destination. Visit York, the leisure tourism brand of Make It York, is launching a new summer marketing campaign, #LoveYork, to support tourism, leisure and hospitality businesses in their recovery. It aims to inspire people to choose York for their summer holiday and spend more in the city. The campaign which is costing £61,000 will include an eight-week TV campaign which will go live on Channel 4 from Monday, May 17, when more restrictions lift. As previously reported, City of York Council agreed to transfer the remaining £64,000 of the Covid tourism marketing budget to Make It York to support the Visit York / Tourism Advisory Board 2021 leisure marketing campaign.
