Betsy Joles

WIRED, Al Jazeera, NBC, and PRI, among others.  As a college student and early graduate, Joles followed stories of Syria s diaspora from Turkey to Lebanon, and Malaysia, before moving to China, where she reported on the protest movement in Hong Kong and the early days of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan. While based in Beijing, she also collaborated with the International Committee of the Red Cross to cover the aftermath of tribal warfare in the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea.  Joles has received training from the Dart Center on reporting safely in crisis zones, sponsored by the Rory Peck Trust, the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, and ACOS Alliance. She is a stringer for Getty Images and a grantee of the International Women s Media Foundation for her project on China s two-child policy.

Revisiting the Fourth Estate: does the media still serve democracy? – A Radio Panel Discussion, broadcasting Tuesday May 4th at 2pm This panel discussion explores whether, in a changing media landscape and deepening global democratic recession, the ideal of the fourth estate is still desirable and attainable. Long-term challenges around objectivity, regulation and censorship have been exacerbated while problems of power and ownership have intensified. We are simultaneously grappling with the implications of novel technologies, including algorithms, and trying to find alternative economic models. The media is a recognised factor accelerating the democratic decline of the last two decades. As new technologies, platforms and finance streams open up alternative avenues for participation, the media might also be a vital source of democratic renewal.

Russell Lewis As NPR s Southern Bureau chief, Russell Lewis covers issues and people of the Southeast for NPR from Florida to Virginia to Texas, including West Virginia, Kentucky, and Oklahoma. His work brings context and dimension to issues ranging from immigration, transportation, and oil and gas drilling for NPR listeners across the nation and around the world. In addition to developing and expanding NPR s coverage of the region, Lewis assigns and edits stories from station-based reporters and freelancers that air on NPR s news programs, working closely with local correspondents and public radio stations. He spent a year in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, coordinating NPR s coverage of the massive rebuilding effort and the reverberations of the storm in local communities. He joined NPR in 2006 and is based in Birmingham, Alabama.
