5 killed as typhoid outbreak hits Neno: Malawi considers vaccine

December 29, 2020 Osman Faiti - Nyasa Times 3 Comments An outbreak of Typhoid fever has been reported in Neno District claiming five deaths and 56 cases of suspects with 41  confirmed positive, district health authorities have said.  Malango: Typhoid vaccine is one of the interventions that Ministry of Health could deploy Typhoid fever patients exhibit symptoms of fever, headache, shivering and stomach-ache.  It is a life-threatening illness caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi, and spreads through poor hygiene habits and public sanitation conditions, and sometimes by flying insects feeding on faeces. Neno District Hospital spokesperson Caroline Banda said Traditional Authority (T/A) Dambe and Chakulemebra are the hot spots for the outbreak.

Neno Typhoid; 2 Deaths, 23 Cases A second person has died of Typhoid Fever with other twenty three cases confirmed in Neno district. According to Neno District Hospital Public Relations Officer, Caroline Banda, the outbreak has now reached areas of two senior chiefs of Dambe and Symon where sanitation is a challenge due to unavailability of safe water sources. Yes it s true that our district has been hit by Typhoid Fever and from last week we had three confirmed cases with one death, said Banda. Banda said the numbers have been incredibly increasing this week with forty eight patients visiting different heath centres with Typhoid Fever symptoms.

Hailstorm Destroys Crops In Mchinji

Hailstorm has destroyed people’s crops in the area of Traditional Authority Dambe in Mchinji District on Wednesday, December 16 2020. District Relief and Rehabilitation officer Violet Jimu confirmed that the hailstorm has damaged crops like maize and soya beans. She said households from Group Village Head Panye, Mtengavumba, Mchilumba,Dambe, Chikoti and Jekemu inTraditional Authority Dambe’s area are the ones that have been affected. Meanwhile, the district officials await a formal report which will follow after assessment but no injuries have been recorded. in a related development,  flooding waters have submerged some houses and business structures, effectively displacing hundreds of people who have sought refuge uplands following the heavy rains in Mangochi yesterday.
